ATMO 596A: Progress in Atmospheric Science

Coordinator: Prof. William C. Conant

This webpage provides details for students obtaining course credit for attending the Department of Atmospheric Sciences seminar series.

The link to the ATMO seminar series webpage is: http://www.atmo.arizona.edu/faculty/seminars/.

NOTE:  The first seminar is the first week of class: Thursday Aug 23 at 2:30, not 3:30!

Those of you who can’t make this lecture (for example, those of you enrolled in Dynamics) can see a video + powerpoint presentation of the lecture on Thursday Aug 30.

Course Details

1)       For credit in this course, attendance at all seminars is required.  Exceptions can be made – please let me know of these before the fact.  In the case that you miss an ATMO seminar, you will need to conduct a makeup by attending and reporting on another seminar in a related department (LPL, Geo., Tree ring, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Optical Science, …).

2)       Following each seminar, each student needs to write a concise paragraph summarizing and critiquing the material covered.  In addition, cite two papers in the peer-reviewed literature by groups not affiliated with the speaker that deal closely with the subject covered.  (You do not have to write about or report on these papers.)  These can be papers referenced in the talk itself.

3)       Email the paragraph to me (conant@atmo.arizona.edu) before the next scheduled seminar begins.  Late paragraphs will not get full credit.

4)       The course is on the “alternative” grading system (S, P, C, D, E).

5)    If no seminar is scheduled for a given week, you are off the hook

6)    Grading:  You receive 2 points for a  missing paragraph, 1 point for a late paragraph, 0 points for an on-time paragraph.  0-1 points = “S”, 2-3 points = “P”, 4-5 = “C”, 6-7 = “D”, 8 or more = “E”.  TURN IN YOUR PARAGRAPHS ON TIME.  We anticipate about 8-10 seminars this semester.

Occasionally, I may want to send the class email notifications of updates to this website’s announcements.  For example, this might include modifications to the seminar schedule or grading policies.  To receive such notices by email, please subscribe to the course list server by following the directions at the following link: http://listserv.arizona.edu/Subscribe.html.  The list you want to join is “atmo596A”.  Also, by enrolling in the listserv, you will be sure to get the seminar announcements on time!
