NATS101 Section 6:  QUIZ 1 Review items

There will be approximately 25 questions, mostly multiple choice with some short anwers.

You are responsible for

material in the book up through page 34 of text

material in lectures 1-5 (which are on line)

Anything stated in class

Many of the quiz questions are based on the questions at the end of each chapter.  Make sure you can answer the ÒQuestions for ReviewÓ in the book:

Ch. 1 questions 1-25.

Ch. 2 questions 1-9

Be able to determine temperature, dew point, pressure, wind direction and speed and cloud cover from the weather symbols discussed in class and defined in Appendix C in the book (4th Ed. 431-432; 5th Ed. 441-442).

Know the symbols for the major gases like (molecular) water is H2O.

Atmospheric pressure is related to the weight of the air above the altitude at which the pressure reading is being taken. (if you are at an altitude where 90% of the atmosphere is above you (~1 km altitude), then the pressure is approximately 900 mb).

Be able to convert between the temperature scales: Fahrenheit, Celsius and Kelvin

Simple understanding of heat transfer: conduction, convection and radiation and latent heat transfer

Convection:       Hot air is less dense than cold air so hot air wants to rise and cold air is more dense and wants to sink

Latent heat refers to the energy that must be added to water to convert it from ice to liquid to vapor.  When water vapor condenses into water liquid, the process of condensation releases latent heat into the surrounding air, warming the air and raising its temperature.

Why does an evaporative or ÒswampÓ cooler reduce the air temperature?

Why does the formation of a cloud indicate the air in the cloud is warming
