You may find some shorter segments that have separated from the
main column in your thermometer. This happens when they are being
carried around in student's backpacks.
The temperature measurements made with one of these thermometers are
probably not very accurate. Experiments #2 and #3, however, only
use temperature difference values in the actual calculations.
Even though the temperature measurements may be a little off, the
temperature difference measurements made with thermometers with
separated columns are still pretty accurate.
Use the top of the main column for all of your temperature
measurements. Ignore any small segments that you find just above
the main column or at the top of the thermometer.
