Discovery of Oxygen Report Writing Guidelines
You can earn up to 6 pts for report content and up to 4 pts for
writing quality.
Content
Here are some of the main points to think about while you read the
articles about oxygen and prepare your report.
Who discovered oxygen & when
was that done? What was known about air or oxygen prior to
that? Why is there some question about who was the first person
to isolate/discover oxygen?
Did the first scientists really discover oxygen? Did they know,
for example, that is was one of several gases in air? What
was or were some of the original names given to oxygen? What is
the origin of the name oxygen?
You might describe the kinds of experiments that lead scientists to
conclude that the gas they had isolated was also present in air.
What were some of the properties of this gas that the scientists
discovered in experiments?
You shouldn't need to go beyond the reference sources given and
don't need to cite them. You should cite any other sources that
you use.
Writing Quality
Here are some things you can do to maximize your chances of earning a
high writing quality grade:
Explain the material in your own
words - your report should be your understanding and explanation of the
material. Avoid generalites, try to include specific
details and examples from the reading section. But at the same
time don't include too much detail. What are the 2, 3 or 4 main
points? What points would you be likely to remember? Try
to organize your report
into a few short paragraphs rather than one long paragraph. The
separate
sections or paragraphs of your paper should blend together into one
seamless coherent report. Your
report should be
nearly free of misspelled words and grammatical errors.
