Mon., Aug. 20
Welcome to ATMO 170A1 - Introduction to Weather and
Climate. I had a hard time deciding on some music for
the 1st day of class but finally settled on "Intro" from a group called
The XX. I played a long version in
class though you might want to check out the following short version
which comes with a nice video. For
the
last
couple
of
years
I
have
been filling
the few minutes before class with some
kind of music, often local talent. Music won't ordinarily take up
any actual
class
time. Hopefully you'll like at least some of the
selections. Comments and ideas from students are welcome.
Wed., Aug. 22
A couple of songs before class this afternoon: "Don't Think Twice,
It's Alright" and "Places to Go"
from the Leftover Cuties.
I
heard
a
song
I liked, "Smile
Big",
during a Samsung Galaxy commercial on TV during the Olympics.
Turned out it was one of theirs. They also do a pretty good
version of "At Last".
Fri., Aug. 24
A couple of songs from Johnny Hollow before class today. "Stone Throwers"
was followed by "People
Are
Strange".
Mon., Aug. 27
I mentioned to a friend that I was having trouble finding
new
music to play in class and he suggested I checkout the
Raveonettes. You heard a couple of songs ("Ignite" and "No
Joy")
from them before class today.
Wed., Aug. 29
2 complete songs ("That Year", and "I Will") and
about
half
of
a
third song ("Touching the Ground")
from
Brandi
Carlile
were
featured before class this afternoon.
Fri., Aug. 31
A couple of songs from Rodrigo y Gabriela ("Stairway to Heaven",
and
"Hanuman") to
get everyone energized for the upcoming 3-day weekend.
Wed., Sep. 5
Time for 3 songs from Crooked Still before class this
afternoon ("Foggy
Mountain
Special", "American
Tune", and "Baby,
What's
Wrong
With
You?")
Fri., Sep. 7
Marching into the weekend with "Rhapsody in Blue" by Pearl
Kaufman.
I
couldn't
find Kaufman's version on YouTube but here's a good
substitute. You should listen to "Bumble Boogie"
(Pearl Kaufman's version).
Mon., Sep. 10
A couple of songs from one of my favorite local groups:
Calexico. I played "Quattro
(World Drifts In)" and most of "Alone Again
Or". You'll need to come to the T Th 8 am class tomorrow if
you want to hear "Ballad
of
Cable
Hogue".
Wed., Sep. 12
Some mariachi music to celebrate Mexican Independence Day
(from
Spain) coming up this weekend (Sept. 16). You heard
Cancion del
Mariachi, and El
Picador
(World Drifts In) (2:47). Not nearly enough time
for El
Cascabel
(7:05) or Crystal
Frontier (9:13) but you can listen to them on your
own
if you want to. All of these videos featuring Calexico and
Mariachi Luz de Luna were
recorded at the Barbican Theater in London in 2002.
Fri., Sep. 14
Three songs from the Fleet Foxes (I like the way they sound
in a
big room like ILC 150). You heard "White Winter Hymnal",
"Tiger Mountain
Peasant Song", and "Mykonos".
Mon., Sep. 17
A couple of songs from The Be Good Tanyas before class this
afternoon. You heard "Rowdy Blues" and
"When
Doves
Cry". I heard a song during an old episode of Breaking
Bad that I liked. It turned out to be their version of "Waiting Around to Die".
Wed., Sep. 19 Quiz #1
Sigur Ros "Festival"
Fri., Sep. 21
The earlier class was finishing a test so we got into the
classroom a few minutes later than normal and there was not quite time
for two complete songs from the Robert Plant and Alison Krauss album
Raising Sand. You heard "Sister Rosetta Goes
Before Us" and part of "Let Your Loss by
Your Lesson".
Mon., Sep. 24
You heard about 2/3rds of "Oaxaca" from a
group called Maserati before class today.
Wed., Sep. 26
After listening to an initial song, "Gitanos
Californeros" from Fishtank Ensemble, a decision was made to not
play a second song ("Tchavo" from the
same group).
Fri., Sep. 28
Just about the best version of Stand By Me
you'll ever hear (in my opinion at least) from Playing for Change.
Mon., Oct. 1
Songs from the Beatles are often short so I was able to squeeze 4
in before class today. You heard "I'll
Cry Instead", "Things
We
Said
Today", "You
Can't Do That",
and "I'll Be Back"
all
from
the
"A
Hard
Day's
Night"
album.
Wed., Oct. 3
"Dragonfly"
from
Ziggy
Marley and "Dar-Es-Salaam"
by
Ras
Nas before class this afternoon.
Fri., Oct. 5
I try to save the unusual music for Friday afternoon.
The
first song was "Hold
On", the second "Baka" from a
group named Outback.
Mon., Oct. 8
A busy 10 minutes before the start of class with Green Cards
to
distribute, Experiment #2 reports and materials to collect, a
demonstration to set up, and music playing in the background. You
heard "Swing 49", "Gypsymania", and "Turkish Delights" from the Live at
Birdland Django Reinhart NY Festival. I wasn't able to find any
of those songs on YouTube, but here is "Caravan" which
is a good substitute.
Wed., Oct. 10 Quiz #2
Israel
Kamakawiwo'ole
"Somewhere
Over the
Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" and "Ka Huila Wai"
Fri., Oct. 12
A couple of Bob Dylan classics while checking out
Experiment #3
materials. You heard "Like a Rolling Stone" and about 2/3rds of
"Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again".
Mon., Oct. 15
"Sometimes"
from
the
Punch
Brothers
was
the first song you heard today (here's a live
version). After that you heard part of "Movement and Location".
Wed., Oct. 17
A song I heard earlier this week while eating lunch, "Somebody That I Used
to Know" from Gotye.
Fri., Oct. 19
Just a single song this afternoon before class. It was "Nothing Else Matters"
from
Apocalytica.
Mon., Oct. 22
We had a visitor in class today from Peru so I thought some music
from the Andes might be appropriate. You heard "Tierra de
Vicunas" and "Ocaso" from a group named Sukay. Turns out they're
from Bolivia not Peru and I wasn't able to find them on YouTube.
