Bonus Optional Assignment

This assignment is due at the beginning of class on Tuesday Sep. 19.  You should simply come up to the front of the room at the beginning of class and turn it in, there won't be any announcement in class.   You'll find answers to the first two questions in Tuesday's (Sept. 12) notes.  You'll have to look in Thursday's notes (Sept. 14) notes to find answers to the second two questions.

1. In (a) below, the air in the flask has the same temperature and pressure as the air outside the flask.  Based on what you see in (b), is the does the air in the flask have  HIGHER  or  LOWER  pressure than the air outside the flask.  Would you have needed to  WARM  or  COOL  the air in the flask to cause this change in air pressure?  Click here if you really have trouble answering this question.

2.
Explain (in words or with a sketch) how Galileo proved that air has weight.

3. Before the pressure is plotted on a surface weather map, a 75 mb correction must be made to the station pressure measured in Tucson.  Does the correction need to be ADDED to or SUBTRACTED from the station pressure value?  To convert to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) does a 7 hour time zone difference need to be  ADDED to  or  SUBTRACTED from  the local time in Tucson?

4. Weather symbols #1 and #2 below represent a northern hemisphere hurricane and a northern hemisphere tropical storm respectively.  What do you think symbols #3 and #4 are for?  What do you notice is different with symbols #3 and #4?
