Topic #1 - Factors that Affect Air Pollution

You can earn up to 6 pts for report content and up to 6 pts for writing quality.

Content points will be awarded approximately as follows:
Up to 1 pt.  for explaining how wind can prevent air pollutants from building up in a localized area.

Up to 2.5 pts for discussing inversions and stability.  Much of the material in this section should be somewhat familiar to you.  What is an inversion?  Does an inversion create stable or unstable atmospheric conditions?  Would stable or unstable conditions lead to a buildup of air pollutants?  How do surface radiation inversion differs from subsidence inversions?  What is meant by the term mixing layer?  It is probably best not to write about material such as how the Pacific High and upwelling of ocean water create summer air pollution problems in Los Angleles unless you feel confident you really do understand this material.

Up to 1 pt. for explaining how topography can contribute to the buildup of pollutants.

Up to 1.5 pts for a discussion of the urban heat island effect and how it can affect air pollution.

Here are some things you can do to maximize your chances of earning a high writing quality grade:
Explain the material in your own words - your report should be your understanding and explanation of the material.  Avoid generalites, try to  should include specific details and examples from the reading section.  The separate sections or paragraphs of your paper should blend together into one seamless coherent report.  Your report should be nearly free of misspelled words and grammatical errors.
