Community Earth System Model (CESM)

Coupled model of Earth system (www.cesm.ucar.edu/models/cesm1.2/):

• Includes atmosphere, land, ocean, sea ice, land ice, and river routing components.
• Various resolutions: going to run at 0.9x1.25_0.9x1.25
• Component sets (compsets): various configurations of components that the model can be run with.

How to run CESM

• Where to put CESM? GLADE file spaces
• Download CESM:
• Register to gain access to repository
• cd /glade/p/work/<username>
• Use Subversion to download: Check-out cesm1_2_2.
• Running CESM:
• Step 1: Create a new case: create_newcase -case <case_dir> -compset <compset> -res 0.9x1.25_0.9x1.25 -mach yellowstone
• cd <case_dir>
• Step 2: Set up the case: ./cesm_setup
• Step 3: Build model: ./<case>.build Put changes in SourceMods.
• Step 4: Run model: ./<case >.submit Define run type and how long of a run in env_run.xml. For your 1-year simulation, set RUN_REFCASE to "f.e12.FAMIPC5.f09_f09.amip_L30.001", RUN_STARTDATE and RUN_REFDATE to 1994-01-01, and GET_REFCASE to TRUE. Customize namelist in user_nl_*.
• Output in /glade/scratch/<username>/archive/<case>.
