(IGSNRR), 20 September - 23 September, 2002 The Sino-US Centers were host to a visiting delegation from the Haihe River Water Conservancy Commission. The Commission and their U.S. host, Dr. Joseph Domagalski (USGS/Sacramento, California), visited the Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed and the University of Arizona campus after visiting the San Francisco Bay area and important ecological sites. Briefings on campus were given on the NASA Southwest Regional Earth Science Applications Center (RESAC), the NOAA Climate Assessment Project (CLIMAS), the NSF Science and Technology Center on Semi-Arid Hydrology and Riparian Areas (SAHRA). The Commission president, Mr. Wang Zhimin, and Dr. Domagalski briefed business, state government and university representatives from the Tucson-Phoenix area on their collaboration in research in the Haihe basin. Mr. Wang outlined key issues for their Commission, including construction of a major south-north water diversion project and the need to apply intelligent practices for a sustainable, healthy environment. Comparisons with the Central Arizona Project and the Central Valley Project of California were made. Goals of such projects should be to ensure sustainable water supplies, respect of the ecosystem, and a public ethos of water conservation. An invitation extended from the Sino-US Centers in both Yangling and Tucson to the Commission to join the Sino-US Centers was warmly accepted. Proposals for a joint academic program and research collaborations with SAHRA and other projects, all with links through Sino-US Centers' associates across the U.S., are under discussion. Announcements of opportunity will be made through this web site. Special thanks are extended to Drs. Joe Domagalski, Waite Osterkamp and John Gray (DOI/USGS), Jeffrey Stone (USDA/ARS), Soroosh Soroshian and Gary Woodard (UA/SAHRA), Roger Bales (UA/RESAC), Richard Hawkins (UA/Agriculture), Gary Ong and Lauren Lee (U.S. China Business Council), Ken Seasholes (Arizona Department of Water Resources), Carol Carpenter (UA/International Office), Jim Shuttleworth and Bob Clark (both UA/Hydrology), Xubin Zeng (UA/Atmospheric Sciences), Patrick Jones (UA/Office of Technology Assessment).
