About
the Centers
Erosion
and transport of soil has worldwide implications for agriculture, landscape
stability, climate, natural hazards, and clean, renewable resources of
water and air. Assured access to clean water and a healthy and safe environment
requires an ethic of conservation and protection. The minimum scale in
which these principles apply successfully is basin wide. These are the
fundamental concerns of the Sino-US Centers for Soil and Water Conservation
and Environmental Protection.
Locations
The
focus for Chinese participation is located in Yangling, Shaanxi Province,
at the Northwest Sci-Tech University for Agriculture
and Forestry. The U.S. focus is located
at the University of Arizona in Tucson,
Arizona, USA.

Goals
(a) Understand
the processes that affect soil and water conservation and environmental
protection;
(b) Develop
and/or identify better management practices to conserve soil and water
and to protect the environment;
(c) Disseminate
information and educate and inform those who may use or expand upon
the CentersÕ accomplishments.
Need
Precious
natural resources such as soil and water and the environmental conditions
underlying good health fortify a countryÕs economy and its ability to
share experience and wealth for worldwide benefit. Neglect and insensitivity
to environmental conditions, inferior application of technology, and increasing
demands to occupy and reshape the land, produce food, and exploit water
are barriers to using and sustaining natural resources. In China and the
United States, government agencies, educational institutions, and the
business sector are establishing the Centers and addressing these concerns.
Joint
Organizing Committee
The Centers
were formed under the guidance of a Joint Organizing Committee,
